Christmas at South Hills - Week 1 - Adam Smith - “The Feeling In The Air” 12.3.23

Because of his murderous campaign to kill every boy child under 2 years old, Herod is the obvious villain of the Christmas story. He’s also the easiest villain to look down on, because his actions are so evil we can only compare them to something from a movie. But, while his actions are unimaginable, his motivations are much more familiar to us. King Herod’s grasping for power led him to commit one tragedy after another. For many of us, our yearning for power is a threat to Christmas still.

I Can Quit Whenever I Want - Week 4 - Adam Smith - “Popcorn, Poetry, And Pregnancy” 11.26.23

There’s nothing like the feeling of finally getting on top of something you’ve been battling for a while. Compulsions are hard to kick. And our tendency, when we get a taste of freedom, is to boldly announce, “I’m never going back there! I’m not going to let that have a hold on me like that again!” And we mean it. But for most people, freedom from our addictions doesn’t seem to last. How many of us know someone who worked unbelievably hard to crawl out of the hole they were in, only to find themselves back in debt, gaining all the weight back, falling for the same sort of guy they swore off last time? Why do so many of us relapse? Are we doomed? Is it possible to get free and stay free or is true freedom a pipe dream?

I Can Quit Whenever I Want - Week 3 - Adam Smith - “Blinders” 11.19.23

For the most part, our mindset is, “I should be able to do whatever I want, as long as I’m not hurting anyone.” And most of our indulgences don’t seem to be. Who cares if you add more clothes you don’t need to your closet, or sneak an extra piece of cake in the breakroom, or lose sight of your other obligations during NFL season? Although, if what we were doing was hurting someone, would we even notice? Is it possible that some of our pursuits are doing a disservice to our bodies, budgets, or relationships in ways we don’t even realize? Saying ‘yes’ to anything means saying ‘no’ to something else. Could it be we’re saying ‘no’ to something ultimately meaningful in pursuit of something temporarily enjoyable? Are their costs we’re not calculating? And if they suddenly came into view, what would you do?

I Can Quit Whenever I Want - Week 2 - Adam Smith - “Secrets, Shame, And Looking Stupid” 11.12.23

Ever have something you don’t like about yourself that you wish you could change? And you think, “I’m just going to do this on my own. Nobody needs to know about this. I can figure it out.” But it ends up being WAY more difficult than you thought. You start to think you might need help, but you hate the thought of asking for it. Others may not feel this way, but for you, confessing this is too embarrassing. What will they think of you? How will it change your relationship? Shouldn’t you know how to deal with this by now? Why does getting better have to involve other people?

I Can Quit Whenever I Want - Week 1 - Adam Smith - “It’s Not A Problem…Until It Is” 11.5.23

We all have little things we can’t imagine life without—online shopping, Monday night football, after dinner ice cream. They’re bright spots in our day; stuff that makes us happy and enables us to push through. But sometimes we come to lean on it a little too much. We move from liking it to needing it. In fact, we get really upset if we have to go without it. When does a hobby or habit become an addiction? Would you even be able to tell if it crossed that line? And if it had, would you be willing to face it and do something about it?

Family Month - Week 5 - Adam Smith - “Mountains, Buttons, Cycles & Coming Home” 10.29.23

Family members aren’t always going to get along. That’s a given. With different personalities come different preferences and perspectives. We’re bound to disagree and get on each other’s nerves. Obviously, we can overlook the small stuff, but what about the big stuff? What happens when someone says or does something deeply wounding that they can’t take back? The type of stuff you can’t undo, or fully make up for. What then? Are there certain levels of hurt relationships just can't recover from? How do you make peace with people who don’t seem sorry and may never change? You don’t, right? You can’t. Or can you?

Family Month - Week 4 - Guest Speaker: Riverside Campus Pastor - Ozzie Vaca 10.22.23

We all know people who didn’t grow up in a great family but made their way through life leaning on their “chosen” family. These are people they’re not biologically related to, but who love, support, challenge, and encourage them to be their best selves. They needed these extra influences because they didn’t have access to a built-in family. But does that mean that those who do, don’t need additional help from the outside? If a family was completely healthy and godly, should they be able to meet all of each other’s needs on their own? Can you become who God has called you to be without the involvement of anyone but your family?

Family Month - Week 3 - Adam Smith “This Isn’t Fair!” - 10.15.23

We’ve all heard the phrase, “Family first!” What does that mean though? Is the family unit more important than the individuals in it? Does being a part of a family mean letting go of your personal identity? What if what’s good for them is bad for you? The Bible seems to talk a lot about sacrifice. Is that God’s expectation—that give up our goals and dreams for the sake of our family? What if you’re giving so much it’s making you unhealthy? Most families say they want to support each other, but if that’s true, why does it feel like some are doing all the work and others are reaping all the benefits? Is that just the way it is?

Family Month - Week 2 - Adam Smith “I Need You To Agree” - 10.8.23

We all have a high need for belonging; to feel like we fit with a group of people. We want to be known, loved, and accepted for who we are. But when it comes to family, it can feel like we have pick one or the other. Like we can either be honest OR accepted, but we can’t be both. Why do some of us feel least comfortable with those we should have the closest connection to? Can you ONLY truly belong with people who see eye-to-eye with you on everything? Is diversity possible in a close-knit family? Or is “my way or the highway” the only way?

Family Month - Week 1 - Adam Smith “Linguine Envy & Hot Lava Hurricanes” - 10.1.23

We all want to be happy. We design our lives around it. We want to have fun, be carefree, and enjoy our day to day. And obviously, we want the same thing for our family. Few things make us sadder than seeing those we love unhappy. But sometimes they are. Happiness is a hard state to sustain. Expectations go unmet, preferences clash, and feelings get hurt. What then? Do we ignore it, try and fix it, change the subject, force everyone into alignment? If someone in my family is unhappy, what’s my responsibility? Isn’t making each other happy the whole point of family? If not, then what is?

Tiny Golden Statues - Week 4 - Guest Speaker: Moses Camacho “Most Organized” - 9.24.23

Nobody likes feeling out of control, but for some of us, uncertainty keeps us up at night. It’s our constant preoccupation. We want to know that everything is going to happen the way we want it to when we want it to. Almost at any cost. The issue is—there are so many uncontrollable variables in so many areas of life. We end up deciding, “If you want something done right, do it yourself.” But then we find ourselves overcommitted and overextending, burning ourselves out trying to hold everything together. And our obsession with control not only fries our nerves and robs us of sleep it drives the people around us crazy and sometimes wrecks relationships altogether. What do we do with this need to have a handle on a life that constantly feels like it's slipping through our fingers?

Tiny Golden Statues - Week 3 - Pastor Adam Smith “This Is Torture” - 9.17.23

Ever fantasize about having enough money not to work? You could just relax. That’d be the dream, wouldn’t it? Work sometimes feels like an annoying interruption to what we want to be doing and the life we wish we were living. Ever just wish you could walk away? It’s hard to hate your job but need the money. Life can start to feel like a survival cycle of gritting your teeth, grinding it out, and daydreaming about your days off. And it’s not always because your job is hard, sometimes it’s…bland—pointless, meaningless, monotonous. Then again, there are people who seem to love their work, even some who have low status jobs we’d never want. What have they learned that maybe we haven’t? And what does Scripture have to say about the purpose of work and how to make your work situation work for you?

Tiny Golden Statues - Week 2 - Pastor Adam Smith “Nobody Likes You” - 9.10.23

It's natural to want to be liked, fit in, and feel like you belong. But is it possible to become too preoccupied with the opinions and approval of others? What happens when your worth feels directly tied to being understood, admired, or respected by certain people? When any sort of disagreement or rejection feels like a death blow? When you find yourself wondering if anyone truly wants you for you? Sometimes in our pursuit of being liked by others, we lose sight of who we are and how to care for ourselves. We feel like we have to constantly strive and perform to earn acceptance and we project neediness on those around us. Why does this happen & how do we break free?

Political Powder Keg - Week 4 - Adam Smith “Sriracha Sandcastles (And Other Unreliable Obsessions)“ - 8.27.23

It’s easy to look around our nation (at all the disagreement, debate, angst, and anger) and wonder: Is it all hopeless? The chaos of our current political climate can make you sick to your stomach. And before you know it, you find yourself in a full-on panicked fight for your side—because what’s at stake feels way bigger than a single election, candidate, policy, or party. It feels like hope itself is hinged to these things. And there’s not a more desperate feeling. Where does it come from? What does it look and feel like? What produces it and what does it produce? What if the issue isn’t that it doesn’t exist, but that we’re looking in the wrong places for it?

Political Powder Keg - Week 3 - Adam Smith “Ok, Bad Example“ - 8.20.23

When our values feel threatened, our impulse is to fight back. There’s nothing fundamentally wrong with that, but does it ever go too far? Where are the lines? Are there any? Some of us get so preoccupied with defending our politics that we end up driving people from our faith. Our loyalty to Jesus takes a backseat to our loyalty to a party or policy. If you’re honest—which are you more interested in winning people to—your political views or your spiritual beliefs? Do your words & actions reflect your answer? And if not, what might it be costing you, your neighbors, and Christianity itself?

Political Powder Keg - Week 2 - Adam Smith “You’re Going Down!“ - 8.13.23

We’ve all looked at someone with an opposing view and wondered, “How could they think that?” We’re genuinely baffled. We’re become even more confused when the person who came to such a different conclusion claims to be a Christian. How is that possible? We assume it’s not. You can’t be a Christian and think like that, vote like that, or support that candidate! They’re clearly wrong. How can their faith have informed their view when your faith is what informed your view…and you have the OPPOSITE view? Are half the Christ-followers you know idiots, or could it be that everything isn’t as cut-and-dry as you think it is? Can we hold different political views and still be loyal to Jesus? Is that even possible? If so, how?

Political Powder Keg - Week 1 - Adam Smith “Kingdoms & Casualties“ - 8.6.23

These days everything feels political and everything political feels like a fight. There are no neutral topics or people. Everything is either red or blue. And anyone who doesn’t agree with you is out to get you. So, we tiptoe through life knowing we could end up at war with almost anyone over anything at any time. And that fight may be the end of that relationship. It’s exhausting. But it also feels inevitable. Because there’s a lot on the line. Jesus is on our side and wants us to win at all cost. However, Jesus challenged his followers to not fight like everyone else or over the same things as everyone else. He challenged us to be different. How and why?

Noise Canceling - Week 5 - Adam Smith “Boycotts, Beers & Binary Thinking“ - 7.30.23

We might expect God to speak through a Bible verse, worship lyric, or sermon quote. These things feel sanctified, sacred, safe. But where else might we find the voice of God? What about a romance novel, superhero comic, R rated movie, or explicit song? Should we look for God in these places or avoid them altogether? Are there certain things God never speaks through? Is it possible for something to pull one person closer to God while pushing someone else away? How do you know when to look closer and when to look away?

Noise Canceling - Week 4 - Adam Smith “Windstorms & Whispers“ - 7.23.23

Most of us aren’t great at stillness. We’re always on-the-go, multitasking, earbuds in, distractedly doing one thing while worrying about not having time for the next. A lot of us can’t stand silence. Even more of us can’t sit still. Our lives are busy and noisy, our minds even more so. Ever have someone nudge you and ask, “Did you hear me?” And you wanted to say, “yes”, but you were so distracted you didn’t even realize they were talking? What if God was speaking, but the pace and noise of our everyday lives prevents us from hearing Him? Could it be that God whispers more than He shouts? And if that’s true, what do those whispers sound like and how do we still our souls long enough to sense them?
